Live earnestly here and now.

The fifth and last night of The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. Self-acceptance, trust, contribution, the courage to be ordinary, and life as a dance. Alfred Adler's answer, on one page.

The guiding starContribute to others. Then you won't get lost.
Lesson 1 · Acceptance

Accept, don't affirm

Self-affirmation tells yourself "I can do it" when you can't. Self-acceptance says "I'm at 60 out of 100. How do I get closer?" Accept what you can't change. Change what you can.

→ Start from where you are
Lesson 2 · Trust

Confidence, not credit

Credit is trust with conditions, like a bank loan. Confidence is trust with none. You may get let down. Whether someone betrays you is their task. Trusting is yours.

→ Trust first
Lesson 3 · Contribution

Be of use to someone

Do something useful for others. Not as a sacrifice, but because feeling useful is how you know your worth. Thanks is welcome but not needed.

→ Happiness is feeling useful
Lesson 4 · Ordinary

The courage to be normal

Many people try to be special: the best, or else the worst. Both are shortcuts to attention. Being ordinary is not being worthless. It takes courage.

→ Drop the need to stand out
Lesson 5 · Now

Life is a dance

Life is not a climb to a summit. It is a string of moments, like dancing. Each step is complete in itself. Shine a bright spotlight on now, and the past and future fade.

→ Live this moment fully

The three that feed each other Night 5

1Self-acceptanceLets you trust others without fear.
2TrustLets you see others as comrades you can help.
3ContributionShows you your worth, so you accept yourself.

3 ideas the book throws out

  • "Everyone's against me." Out of ten, one dislikes you. Two are close. Seven don't care.
  • "I'm too busy with work." Hiding in one task is a life-lie.
  • "Life has a set meaning." It has none until you give it one.

Someone has to start

  • Even if others don't help, that's their task.
  • Start with you.

When you change, your world changes.
