Refusal to Worship Idols
Translation (Maududi)
"Say: 'I have been forbidden to worship those whom you call upon other than Allah.' Say: 'I do not follow your desires, for if I do that I would be lost and would not be of those rightly-guided.'"
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
After the Quraysh had repeatedly proposed compromises — that the Prophet ﷺ should soften his stance, acknowledge their idols, or accept some middle position — Allah commands the Prophet ﷺ to make an absolute, uncompromising declaration. There is no negotiation in Tawhid. Maududi underlines two principles: (1) Worship is forbidden to anyone but Allah, regardless of whom anyone calls upon; (2) following human "desires" (ahwā') in matters of belief is the very definition of misguidance. Even the Prophet ﷺ, were he to follow the desires of the powerful Quraysh, would lose his place among the rightly-guided. This sets the standard for every believer afterwards.

The Judgment Belongs to Allah
Translation (Maududi)
"Say: 'I take stand upon a clear evidence from my Lord and it is that which you have given the lie to. That which you demand to be hastened is not within my power. Judgement lies with Allah alone. He declares the Truth, and He is the best judge.'"
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
The Quraysh had mockingly demanded that the Prophet ﷺ "hasten" the punishment they were warned about — saying things like, "If you are truthful, bring down on us a stone from heaven!" (cf. 8:32). Allah responds through the Prophet ﷺ: I stand on clear evidence (bayyinah) — divine revelation. The timing of the chastisement is entirely Allah's prerogative; I do not control it. "In al-ḥukmu illā lillāh" — the entire authority to judge belongs to Allah alone. Maududi underscores: this verse is also a reply to those today who think they can dictate to Allah how and when divine justice should appear.

Allah Knows the Wrongdoers Best
Translation (Maududi)
"Say: 'Were what you demand to be hastened in my power, the matter between me and you would have been long decided. But Allah knows best how to deal with the wrong-doers.'"
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
If the Prophet ﷺ had personal control over divine punishment, the matter would have ended long ago given the Quraysh's persecution. But the timing is Allah's — and Allah's restraint is also wisdom: it allows time for repentance, for some among them to come to Islam (as many later did, including 'Ikrimah and Abu Sufyan), and for the message to spread. Maududi explains that Allah's "delay" is never weakness — it is sovereign mercy and perfect knowledge of every wrongdoer's case.

The Five Keys of the Unseen
59
Al-An'am 6:59
Mafātiḥ al-Ghayb · Keys of the Unseen
Translation (Maududi)
"He has the keys to the realm that lies beyond the reach of human perception; none knows them but He. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea; there is not a leaf which falls that He does not know about and there is not a grain in the darkness of the earth or anything green or dry which has not been recorded in a Clear Book."
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
This is one of the Qur'an's most majestic statements about Allah's knowledge. Mafātiḥ al-ghayb ("the keys of the unseen") refers to all that is beyond human reach — the future, the depths of the earth and ocean, the fates of souls, the timing of the Hour. The verse moves from the cosmically vast (sea, land) to the inconceivably minute (a single falling leaf, one grain in earth's darkness). Nothing — wet or dry, living or dead — is outside Allah's record. Maududi explains: this should fill the believer with awe and the wrongdoer with dread. The "Clear Book" (Kitāb Mubīn) refers to the Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ (Preserved Tablet).

Sleep — The Daily Death
Translation (Maududi)
"He recalls your souls by night, and knows what you do by day; then He raises you back each day in order that the term appointed by Him is fulfilled. Then to Him you will return, whereupon He will let you know what you have been doing."
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
Maududi describes sleep as a daily rehearsal for death. Every night, Allah "takes the soul" (yatawaffākum) — the same root as the word for death — and every morning He returns it. This continues until the appointed term (ajal musammā) is fulfilled, after which the return is permanent. The verse simultaneously affirms: (1) Allah's complete control over life and death, (2) His total knowledge of every action committed by day, and (3) the certainty of accountability. The proof of resurrection is woven into your daily experience: if Allah can return your soul to your body each morning, He can certainly resurrect it on the appointed Day.

The Angel of Death & Recording Angels
Translation (Maududi)
"And He alone holds sway over His servants, and He sends forth recorders to watch over you until, when death approaches one of you, Our deputies take his soul, neglecting nothing."
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
Allah is al-Qāhir — the One who has overpowering authority over His servants from above. He appoints angels (ḥafaẓah — recorders/protectors) who attend every human throughout life, recording every word and deed. When the appointed moment of death arrives, the angels of death (rusul) take the soul with absolute precision — "they neglect nothing" (lā yufarriṭūn). Not a moment early, not a moment late, not a single record missed. Maududi notes this verse should erase any illusion of escape from divine accountability.

Returned to Allah, the True Master
Translation (Maududi)
"Then all are restored to Allah, their true protector. Behold, His is the judgement. He is the swiftest of those who take account."
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
After death, every soul is returned to Allāh mawlāhumu al-ḥaqq — Allah, their true Master. The word ḥaqq ("true") is pointed: every false patron (idol, ancestor, system, ideology) is exposed as illusory. Only Allah is the actual Sovereign. The verse closes with two assertions: (1) Judgment belongs only to Him; (2) He is "the swiftest of those who take account" — meaning the entire reckoning, no matter how vast, requires no time at all for Allah. Every excuse will be heard; every deed weighed; every justice rendered — instantaneously.

Crisis & the Cry of the Soul (Fitrah)
63
Al-An'am 6:63
"Save Us in the Darkness"
Translation (Maududi)
"Ask them: 'Who is it that delivers you from dangers in the deep darkness of the land and the sea, and to whom do you call in humility and in the secrecy of your hearts? To whom do you pray: "If He will but save us from this, we shall most certainly be among the thankful?"'"
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
A devastating argument from lived experience. Maududi explains: when caught in real danger — lost in a desert, shipwrecked at sea, surrounded by enemies, faced with terminal illness — every human, even the most ardent polytheist, instinctively turns to Allah alone. The cry comes from somewhere deeper than learned beliefs: the original disposition (fitrah) of the soul. The two modes of supplication mentioned — taḍarru'an (with humble pleading) and khufyatan (in secrecy) — capture the universal human experience of crisis prayer. The promise made in that moment ("we shall be among the thankful") is the very evidence Allah uses against the polytheists.

Historical Context — 'Ikrimah's Storm
Maududi cites the famous case of 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl: after the conquest of Makkah he fled by sea. When a violent storm struck and the ship was about to capsize, the passengers began calling on their idols. As the storm worsened, they cried: "These (idols) are useless here. Only Allah can save us!" 'Ikrimah recognized in that moment that this was exactly the message his great enemy, the Prophet ﷺ, had been teaching all his life. He vowed: "If Allah saves me, I will return and place my hand in the hand of Muhammad." He survived, returned, and embraced Islam — becoming one of the noble companions.

"Yet You Return to Shirk"
Translation (Maududi)
"Say: 'It is Allah alone Who delivers you from this and from every distress, and yet you associate others with Allah in His divinity.'"
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
The argument is now sealed. Allāh yunajjīkum minhā — "It is Allah who delivers you from it." Not just from this danger, but from every distress (kull karb). Yet despite this lived, repeated, undeniable experience, you return to your idols once relief comes. Maududi explains that this is the spiritual disease of amnesia toward divine grace: the moment safety returns, the lesson is forgotten, the vow broken, the heart re-attached to false partners. The human capacity to forget Allah immediately after being saved by Allah is one of the deepest indictments of unbelief.

Punishment from Above, Below, or Within
Translation (Maududi)
"Say: 'It is He Who has the power to send forth chastisement upon you from above you, or from beneath your feet, or split you into hostile factions and make some of you taste each other's might.' Behold, how We set forth Our signs in diverse forms, so that perhaps they may understand the Truth."
📚
Tafseer — Dr. Maududi
Maududi catalogs the three modes of divine punishment: (1) From above — earthquakes, lightning, plague, foreign invasion descending on a people; (2) From below — being swallowed by the earth (as Qarun), drowning, the collapse of foundations; (3) From within — internal division (shiya'an — sects, factions, civil strife) where members of the same community taste each other's violence. Maududi notes the third — internal fragmentation — is in many ways the most painful and prolonged form of punishment, and is often visible in nations who have abandoned divine guidance.

✦ Key Takeaways & Lessons — Ayat 56–65
Timeless principles drawn from Dr. Maududi's commentary and supporting Hadiths
1
Tawhid is Non-Negotiable: No "middle ground" exists between worship of Allah alone and the desires of any people. Even the Prophet ﷺ, were he to compromise, would lose his guidance. The standard for every believer is uncompromising (Ayah 56).
2
Judgment is Allah's Alone: The timing of divine action is never ours to dictate. Standing on bayyinah (clear evidence) is enough — leave the verdict to the One who decrees the truth (Ayah 57).
3
Allah's Delay is Mercy: If divine punishment were under any other authority, the matter would be settled. Allah's restraint allows time for repentance — even for those who once persecuted Islam (Ayah 58).
4
The Five Keys of the Unseen: Tomorrow, the womb, the rain, the place of death, and the Hour — these belong to Allah alone. No saint, oracle, or technology can claim them. Anyone who does is contradicting the Prophet ﷺ (Ayah 59 + Bukhari 7379).
5
Sleep is a Daily Death: Every night Allah recalls your soul; every morning He returns it. The proof of resurrection is woven into your daily experience. Wake up grateful, sleep prepared (Ayah 60 + Hadith of going to bed).
6
Recording Angels Miss Nothing: Two angels record every word and deed. The angel of death takes every soul "neglecting nothing" — not a moment early or late. Live every hour as if it is being filed (Ayah 61 + Musnad Ahmad 18534).
7
Allah is the Only True Mawlā: Every false patron — idol, ideology, system, person — is exposed as illusion at death. Allah is "the swiftest of those who take account": no excuse will be missed, no justice delayed (Ayah 62).
8
Crisis Reveals the Fitrah: In real danger — lost at sea, surrounded by enemy — every soul cries to Allah alone. This is proof that Tawhid is the original disposition; shirk is a learned overlay. 'Ikrimah's storm is the model (Ayah 63 + Bukhari 1358).
9
Beware Spiritual Amnesia: The deepest indictment of unbelief is forgetting Allah the moment relief comes. Catch yourself: how many vows made in distress are you still keeping today? (Ayah 64).
10
The Three Modes of Punishment: From above, from below, or from within (sectarian division). The Prophet ﷺ himself prayed against the Ummah being split into warring factions — his only du'a refused. The wound of internal division is divine warning (Ayah 65 + Sahih Muslim 2890).
