Ibrahim Sees a Star: "This is My Lord!"
فَلَمَّا جَنَّ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلَّيۡلُ رَءَا كَوۡكَبٗاۖ قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّيۖ فَلَمَّآ أَفَلَ قَالَ لَآ أُحِبُّ ٱلۡأٓفِلِينَ
Translation (Maududi)
"Then, when the night outspread over him, he beheld a star, and said: 'This is my Lord.' But when it went down, he said: 'I do not love the things that go down.'"

Maududi reads the star episode not as Ibrahim actually believing the star to be his Lord, but as a dialectical method — Ibrahim adopts, for the sake of argument, the position of his star-worshipping people, then dismantles it from inside. When the star sets, he says "lā uḥibbu al-āfilīn" — "I do not love things that set/disappear." The logic is simple: a true Lord cannot be one that vanishes. The argument is laid out so that his audience must follow it to its conclusion.

Al-An'am 6:77
Then the Moon: "I do not love things that set"
فَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلۡقَمَرَ بَازِغٗا قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّيۖ فَلَمَّآ أَفَلَ قَالَ لَئِن لَّمۡ يَهۡدِنِي رَبِّي لَأَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
Translation (Maududi)
"Then, when he beheld the moon rising, he said: 'This is my Lord!' But when it went down, he said: 'Were that my Lord did not guide me, I surely would have become among the people who have gone astray.'"

The moon, larger and brighter, was the chief deity of the Sabian-Chaldean pantheon. Ibrahim escalates the test on his people's terms — yet the moon, too, sets. Maududi underlines that Ibrahim's closing remark introduces a critical theological note: even reasoning has limits; without Allah's hidāyah (guidance), the searcher would remain among the misguided. Right reasoning needs revelation to complete it.

Al-An'am 6:78
Then the Sun: "I disassociate from your shirk"
فَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلشَّمۡسَ بَازِغَةٗ قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّي هَٰذَآ أَكۡبَرُۖ فَلَمَّآ أَفَلَتۡ قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّي بَرِيٓءٞ مِّمَّا تُشۡرِكُونَ
Translation (Maududi)
"Then when he beheld the sun rising, he said: 'This is my Lord. This is the greatest of all.' Then, when it went down, he said: 'O my people! Most certainly I am quit of those whom you associate with Allah in His divinity.'"

The sun, brightest of the three, met the same fate — it set. Now Ibrahim publicly issues his barā'ah (disassociation): "Innī barī'un mimmā tushrikūn" — "I am free of what you associate with Allah." Maududi notes the rhetorical progression — star, moon, sun — moves from the smaller to the greater, so that no remaining astral object can be offered as an alternative. The conclusion is total disengagement from every form of shirk.

Al-An'am 6:79
"I Turn My Face to the Creator of Heavens & Earth"
إِنِّي وَجَّهۡتُ وَجۡهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ حَنِيفٗاۖ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ
Translation (Maududi)
"Behold, I have turned my face in exclusive devotion to the One Who originated the heavens and the earth, and I am certainly not one of those who associate others with Allah in His divinity."

Ibrahim's positive declaration after the negation. "Wajjahtu wajhiya" — "I have turned my face" — toward al-ladhī faṭara al-samāwāti wa'l-arḍ, the Originator of the heavens and earth, ḥanīfan — as a pure monotheist inclining away from all false directions. Maududi emphasises that the word ḥanīf is central: it names the original, primordial monotheism — neither paganism, nor distortion, nor compromise. This is also the religion the Qur'an calls every believer back to.

Al-An'am 6:80
Argument: "Will You Dispute About Allah?"
وَحَآجَّهُۥ قَوۡمُهُۥۚ قَالَ أَتُحَٰٓجُّوٓنِّي فِي ٱللَّهِ وَقَدۡ هَدَىٰنِۚ وَلَآ أَخَافُ مَا تُشۡرِكُونَ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ رَبِّي شَيۡـٔٗاۚ وَسِعَ رَبِّي كُلَّ شَيۡءٍ عِلۡمًاۚ أَفَلَا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
Translation (Maududi)
"His people remonstrated with him whereupon Abraham said: 'Do you remonstrate with me concerning Allah Who has guided me to the right way? I do not fear those whom you associate with Allah in His divinity. Only that which my Lord wills will indeed come to pass. My Lord embraces all things within His knowledge. Will you not take heed?'"

The people threatened Ibrahim with the wrath of their idols. He answers calmly: how can you argue with me about Allah after He has guided me? I have no fear of your "gods," because they have no real power; only what Allah wills happens. Maududi highlights the closing phrase "wasi'a rabbī kulla shay'in 'ilman" — "my Lord encompasses all things in knowledge" — as Ibrahim's anchor: the One who knows all is the only One worth fearing.

Al-An'am 6:81
Which of the Two Parties Deserves Security?
وَكَيۡفَ أَخَافُ مَآ أَشۡرَكۡتُمۡ وَلَا تَخَافُونَ أَنَّكُمۡ أَشۡرَكۡتُم بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمۡ يُنَزِّلۡ بِهِۦ عَلَيۡكُمۡ سُلۡطَٰنٗاۚ فَأَيُّ ٱلۡفَرِيقَيۡنِ أَحَقُّ بِٱلۡأَمۡنِۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ
Translation (Maududi)
"Why should I fear those whom you have associated (with Allah in His divinity) when you do not fear associating others with Allah in His divinity — something for which He has sent down to you no authority. Then, which of the two parties has better title to security? Tell us, if you have any knowledge!"

Ibrahim turns the question of fear back on his people. You command me to fear powerless idols, while you yourselves do not fear shirk against Allah — a crime for which He has revealed no permission, no sulṭān (authority/proof). Maududi notes the question is direct: which group truly deserves amn (security) — the one rooted in Tawhid, or the one inventing partners with no warrant? This question is left for the conscience of the reader.

Al-An'am 6:82
Faith Without Wrongdoing — They Have Security
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَلَمۡ يَلۡبِسُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنَهُم بِظُلۡمٍ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡأَمۡنُ وَهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ
Translation (Maududi)
"Those who believe and did not tarnish their faith with wrong-doing for them there is security, and it is they who have been guided to the right way."

Allah Himself answers Ibrahim's question of the previous verse. Real amn belongs to those who believe and do not mix their faith with ẓulm (wrongdoing). Maududi cites the famous hadith (Bukhari 3360) where the Companions worried that this verse would condemn them, since "we all wrong ourselves"; the Prophet ﷺ clarified that the ẓulm meant here is shirk — as Luqman called shirk "a great wrong" (31:13). Pure Tawhid, uncontaminated by associationism, is the foundation of security and guidance.

Al-An'am 6:83
Our Argument Given to Ibrahim
وَتِلۡكَ حُجَّتُنَآ ءَاتَيۡنَٰهَآ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦۚ نَرۡفَعُ دَرَجَٰتٖ مَّن نَّشَآءُۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٞ
Translation (Maududi)
"That was the argument We gave to Abraham against his people. We raise in ranks whom We will. Truly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing."

Maududi draws an important conclusion: the entire chain of arguments — star, moon, sun, the question of fear, the question of security — was a ḥujjah (clear, conclusive argument) bestowed on Ibrahim by Allah. Rational insight in matters of Tawhid is itself a divine gift. Ibrahim's rank was raised because of his sincere search, and Allah raises in rank whomever He wills among those who genuinely seek Him.

Lineage of Prophets — Ishaq, Ya'qub, & Beyond
وَوَهَبۡنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسۡحَٰقَ وَيَعۡقُوبَۚ كُلًّا هَدَيۡنَاۚ وَنُوحًا هَدَيۡنَا مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِۦ دَاوُۥدَ وَسُلَيۡمَٰنَ وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُوسُفَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
Translation (Maududi)
"And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob and guided each of them, as We had earlier guided Noah, and (also guided) of Abraham's descendants, David and Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward those who do good."

Allah lists the prophetic family that flowed from Ibrahim's loins or earlier: Nuh before him; then through his descendants Ishaq, Ya'qub, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa, and Harun. Maududi observes that the catalogue is meant to remind the Quraysh — and the People of the Book — that the prophets they revere all belonged to one continuous line of muḥsinīn (those who do good). Tawhid is not the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ innovation; it is the legacy of every messenger.

Al-An'am 6:85
Zakariyya, Yahya, Isa, Ilyas — All Righteous
وَزَكَرِيَّا وَيَحۡيَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَإِلۡيَاسَۖ كُلّٞ مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
Translation (Maududi)
"(And of his descendants We guided) Zechariah, John, Jesus and Elias: each one of them was of the righteous."

The list continues: Zakariyya, Yahya (John), 'Isa (Jesus), and Ilyās (Elijah) — each described as one of al-ṣāliḥīn (the righteous). Maududi notes the inclusion of 'Isa among Ibrahim's descendants even though 'Isa had no father — affirming that maternal lineage establishes prophetic genealogy. The list dismantles every sectarian fence the Jews and Christians had built around their prophets: they all belong to one community of righteousness centred on Tawhid.
