Where to eat halal.
Certified halal options are limited outside the big cities — always call ahead to confirm. Seafood and vegetarian dishes are widely available and the safest bet in any Portuguese restaurant.

Qibla direction

Quiet parks work well — Guimarães’ Alameda da Liberdade and Parque da Cidade are clean and calm. Carry a travel prayer mat; locals are respectful.
Practical tips.
Transport
Train Porto→Guimarães is ~1hr (~€4). Uber works in every city. The Penha cable car is €3 one way. Cobblestones everywhere — wear trainers, no heels.
June weather
22–28°C, sunny with the odd shower. Sunscreen essential. Pack a light layer for the Penha summit (613m) — it’s cooler up top.
Money
Euro (€). Cards accepted almost everywhere, ATMs are easy to find. Budget ~€50–80 per person per day including food and entries.
Language
Portuguese, but tourist-facing staff speak English. Google Translate handles the rest — a friendly “obrigado” goes a long way.
Plan the day
Start at Guimarães castle ~9am to beat the crowds, take the cable car late morning, wander the old town when the afternoon light hits the tiles.

May–June and September are ideal — warm, long days, fewer crowds. July–August is hot and busy, especially the Algarve.

Halal map & dishes to eat.

Safe to order
Grilled fish (peixe grelhado), bacalhau (salt cod), arroz de marisco (seafood rice), polvo (octopus), sardinhas assadas, soups and salads.
Halal kitchens
Lisbon’s Martim Moniz & Mouraria are full of halal Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Turkish and Lebanese spots; Porto and the Algarve have them too.
Sweet & safe
Pastéis de nata (egg-custard tarts), bread, cheese and fruit are fine. Check pastries for lard or liqueur fillings before tucking in.
Ask before ordering
Many stews and rice dishes use chouriço, presunto (ham) or wine. Ask “tem carne de porco ou álcool?” — does it have pork or alcohol?
Usually not halal
Francesinha, bifana, leitão (suckling pig), alheira (often pork), and anything cooked with chouriço, presunto or a wine sauce.

Visa for Indian travellers.
Portugal is in the Schengen Area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. Here’s the short version.
Which visa
A Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa — up to 90 days in any 180. It covers all Schengen countries, so you can combine Portugal with Spain or France.
Where to apply
Through VFS Global for Portugal in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata & more) or the consulate. Apply up to 6 months ahead, at least 3 weeks before travel.
Documents
Passport (valid 6+ months, 2 blank pages), forms, 2 photos, travel insurance (€30,000 cover), confirmed flights & hotels, 6-month bank statements, ITR, employer/leave letter and a cover letter.
Fees & timing
Visa fee ~€90 (~₹8,000) plus the VFS service charge; children pay less. Processing is usually ~15 working days, longer in peak summer.
Good to know
Carry proof of stay, insurance and funds on arrival. ETIAS does not apply to Indians — that’s only for visa-exempt nationalities.
